The Functioning of Phraseological Units in the Context of the Russian-language Press

The article analyzes the functioning of phraseological units in the texts of the Russian-language press and considers the actualizing components of the linguistic context that support the meaning of phraseological units.

Discourse Marker you know and Functional Approach to Its Translation into Russian in Film Subtitling and Dubbing

The article is concerned with the textual and interpersonal functions of discourse marker you know in movie dialogues and the means of its functional translation in subtitles and dubbing. The subtitled and dubbed versions are compared in terms of the proportion of marker omission as well as the proportion of functional losses.

Lexical and Semantic Group of Color Terms in Modern Germanic Languages

The article reviews the semantic field of color terms in Germanic languages: its structure, characteristic features of the basic part and periphery formation, development trends. Based on lexical and semantic groups of color term adjectives of the English and German languages, the authors determine general and specific features in word formation and semantic processes in the semantic field under research.

A Multifaceted Approach to the Study of Words With the General Meaning of “Action” (In the English Language)

The article shows how a multifaceted approach, which involves the use of different methodological techniques in studying complex phenomena, can facilitate the study of lexemes with the general meaning of human action, in particular, the meta-names of actions. It is applied to the study of an example of a meta-name “gesture”.

About the Present Linguistic Situation in England. On the Problem of the English Language Variability in London

The article studies the linguistic situation in England and focuses on the problem of variability of the English language in London. The analysis of recent foreign sociolinguistic studies proves the fact that at present there has emerged a new multicultural environment which caused the formation of the so-called multiethnolects in the East-End London, traditionally known as the place of cockney people.

Analytical Philosophy of Language in the Context of Studying the Objective Language (Case Study of L. Wittgenstein’s Heritage)

The article deals with the philosophy of language, as well as the specific nature of its interdisciplinary role in the process of linguistic and philosophical research. The specific character of the functioning of the latter is presented in the context of the peculiarities of how the mentioned sciences function. The article focuses on the specific character of L. Wittgenstein’s heritage being actualized in linguistic and philosophical studies.
 

To the Question of Internal Inflection of the Roots in Arabic and Russian (Inflected Analysis of the Root Structure)

The article defines the regular elements participating in the internal flexion and establishing the rules by which the internal flexion is controlled in the Semitic and Indo-European languages, based on the structural-inflectional analysis of the Arabic and Russian roots. The authors identify the scientifically proved patterns with the prospect of forming the basis of a variety of typological works.

Structural Characteristics of Russian Graphic-Lexical Abbreviations

The article reveals the content of the term "graphic-lexical abbreviation" and its relationship with the lexical unit; considers the question of its correlation with the iconic signs of the diagram character; analyzes the possibility of its transition to the full linguistic sign. Graphic-lexical abbreviations accumulate properties of the lexical and graphic abbreviations which are manifested in the peculiarities of their formation and usage in writing and speaking. The graphic-lexical abbreviations may be drawn mainly from English.

Specific Nature of a Popular Science Text’s Expressiveness from the Point of View of Pragmalinguistics

The article studies how the expressiveness category is structured in a popular science text. Lexical, phraseological and syntactic stylistic means used in the novel in order to enhance expressiveness and reasoning are arranged as a field with the center and periphery.

Scientific Pictures of the World and Their Variants in the Russian Language

The article discusses the factors influencing the development of variability of scientific pictures of the world based on the material of science’ and humanities’ terminologies in the Russian language. The correlation of the concepts ‘naïve picture of the world’, ‘scientific picture of the world’, ‘professional picture of the world’, as well as the typology of variants of scientific pictures of the world are considered.
