Scientific Biography of a Writer as a Type of Literary Study (Article Two)

The article contains the description of yet not thoroughly studied specific signs of a scientific
biography of a writer, its internal methodology, its source-based capacities, and basic principles of its structure.

«Righteous Word» of Boris Shergin

In the article the authors analyze specific features of the diary style of B. V. Shergin, who managed to preserve the seamless synthesis of live folk, literary and Church Slavic languages that allows to identify the true ‘inner form’ of the Russian self-recognition embedded in the word.

A. I. Solzhenitsyn at Saratov University: the 1960s

Based on his own recollections and on documented sources the author reconstructs the history of how A. I. Solzhenitsyn’s short novel «One Day In the Life of Ivan Denisovich» was perceived by the members of Saratov University literary club of the first half of the 1960s, under the supervision of a wonderful philologist T. I. Usakina, Assistant Professor of the Chair of the Russian literature of Saratov State University.

V. Pelevin’s Utopian Novel «S.N.U.F.F.»: the Problem of Genre and the Idea of History

The article investigates the genre of V. Pelevin’s novel «S.N.U.F.F.». The main criteria for determining it are the author’s idea of history and his view of the future, which are analyzed on the basis of the text of the book аnd critical reviews.

Mechanisms of Memory in «Nothing to be Frightened of» by Julian Barnes

The article studies the autobiographical book by Julian Barnes, the contemporary English postmodernist writer, where his personal memories illustrate the illusive nature of memory and its limits, revealing such mechanisms of memory as subjective interpretation, forgetting and imagining.

Revolutionary Russia from the Western Intellectual’s Point of View: «Letters from Moscow» (1918) by Alfons Paquet

It is the first time when the articles of Alfons Paquet are studied in the Russian academic humanities. The articles were being written in Russia for Frankfuter Zeitung newspaper from July till November of 1918. Paquet was the first German journalist, which was allowed an admission to Russia after the country withdrew from the war. His publications are valuable testimonies of the turbulent period of Russian history, helping to understand the European bourgeois intellectuals’ viewpoint on the radical changes in Russian political and social life.

To the Question of the Description of Russian Literary Historical Discourse of the Turn of the XX–XXI Centuries

The paper deals with modern literary historical discourse, its contents, boundaries, intentions, and genres. The material under study spans the works of Russian literature created in the late XX and early XXI century. The main tendencies of the discourse evolution are revealed and methods of its further investigation are suggested.

Transformation of Olfactory Motive of «Heavenly Fragrance» in Aesthetic Creativity Literature

The article represents the study of a persistent motive of garden fragrance in the Russian literature («heavenly fragrance») during the development of aesthetic creativity literature (its post-romantic period, according to V. I. Tyupa). The author shows the change of the olfactory motive semantic content.

A. F. Pisemskiy as a Critic. the Article on the «Hidden Rock» by M. V. Avdeev and Pisemskiy’s Views on the «Woman Question»

In the article Pisemskiy’s attitude to women’s emancipation, considered by his contemporaries as one of the central topics of his creative works, is analyzed as part and parcel of artistic images and critical declarations.

N.V. Gogol’s Novel «The Overcoat» in the English-language Perception: the Issue of the Literary Work Translation Equivalence

Six English-language translations of N.V. Gogol’s novel «The Overcoat» are analyzed in the article; special emphasis is placed on the lexical, syntactic and stylistics text characteristics, on the presence of the colloquialisms, historical vocabulary, idioms, puns, and author’s neologisms; the approaches of both Russian and English-speaking researchers to the concept of «translation equivalence», its essence and qualities are defined.
