Picturesque Ekphrasis as a Means of the Protagonist Characterization in D. Rubina’s Novel The White Dove of Cordoba

The article discusses the oeuvre interpretation of Zahar Kordovin, the protagonist of D. Rubina’s novel The White Dove of Cordoba. The pictures of the artist are analyzed from the point of view of ekphrasis which is defined as a verbal description of visual art images in literary text.

N. V. Gogol’s Novel «Overcoat» in the Early Stage of Perception in the English Language Space (on the Translation by C. J. Hogarth)

The article is dedicated to the analysis of the English version of N. V. Gogol’s «Overcoat» that was made by C. J. Hogarth in 1918; some of the main problems that the translators encounter while dealing with the text of the novel are mentioned; the means used for rendering social and national particularities of the text and the plot, Gogol’s narrative technique and reasoning. 

 

FROM THE CREATIVE HISTORY OF THE BOOK FETA "MY MEMORIES": THE BLACK COLUMN OF THE PLAN OF MEMOIRS

The article is devoted to an episode from the creative history of AA's memoirs. Feta, published and commented on a draft outline of the original plan of Fetov's memories. The study is based on handwritten sources, first introduced into scientific circulation.

CHERNYSHEVSKY AND CHEKHOV: CRITICISM OF THE "SMALL HUMAN"

The article examines the evolution of Chernyshevsky's ideas about the hero of Gogol's "Overcoat" (from the apologetics of the humanistic feeling to the "one who needs protection", to the denial of his right to sympathy, to the utterance of "unprofitable truth" about him) in order to show the relapse of such an interpretation of a small man in the domestic czech.

The Reflection and Transformation of Dagestan Folklore and Ethnography in the Works of V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko

The article considers the works of Vas. Iv. Nemirovich-Danchenko, dedicated to Dagestan. In his works the writer depicts the life and customs, folklore and ethnography of the Dagestan highlanders. Speaking about the transformation of Dagestan folklore in the works of Nemirovich-Danchenko, the author of the article also draws upon the ethnographic data featured in the works of Nemirovich-Danchenko, reflecting Dagestan.

The influence of the Russian literature on Chulpan’s oeuvre: Novel Night and Day

The novel Night and Day was initially published in the journal Sovetskaya Literatura (Soviet Literature) in 1934, but was soon banned. In 1989 the Russian translation of the novel was published. The influence of the Russian novel writing school is manifested in the conflict, composition and imagery of the work. In this article, the novel Night and Day is reviewed from the point of view of literary influences on the author.

N.V. Gogol’s Novel «The Overcoat» in the English-language Perception: the Issue of the Literary Work Translation Equivalence

Six English-language translations of N.V. Gogol’s novel «The Overcoat» are analyzed in the article; special emphasis is placed on the lexical, syntactic and stylistics text characteristics, on the presence of the colloquialisms, historical vocabulary, idioms, puns, and author’s neologisms; the approaches of both Russian and English-speaking researchers to the concept of «translation equivalence», its essence and qualities are defined.

Vectors of culture

This is a review of a collected volume of articles prepared by Professor M. Stroganov for his 70th Anniversary. The book intertwines two main academic interests of the author, mixed up in a special, unique to the researcher, methodological paradigm. These are the attention to the literary or folklore text as well as the focus on the diversity of Russian culture in its broadest spectrum: song and singing, music and painting, and the various facets of the theatrical arts.
