M. V. Avdeev’s Article on the «Hidden Pitfal» and A. F. Pisemskiy’s Views on the «Woman Question»

In the article for the first time Pisemskiy’s attitude to the issue of feminine emancipation is viewed in close connection with his artistic images and critical statements; the issue was considered one of the key themes of his works by his contemporaries.

The Problem of Fortune and Fate as the Foundation of the Tragic in M. A. Bulgakov’s Works

The author of the article singles out the main problem of Bulgakov’s tragedy which is a distinctive feature of his plays as well as of epic compositions and of his personal world-view. The author claims that the main profound conflict in Bulgakov’s works turns to be the collision of fortune and fate generally presented in the world literature from Ancient Greeks to our days. The researcher emphasizes some special traits of Bulgakov’s stories of 1930s such as deceptiveness of fortune, prediction of the denouement in action.

Spatial Construction of Islands in Jean Rhys’s «Wide Sargasso Sea»

The paper focuses on spatial construction in Jean Rhys’s «Wide Sargasso Sea», namely, on the opposition of the tropical Caribbean islands and England as two island spaces contributing to the development of the central psychological conflict of the novel, to heroes’ characterization.

Semantic Horizons of «Risk» Notion in the Russian National and Cultural Tradition

The analysis of the semantic limits of the popular notion of ‘risk’ demonstrates that in the Russian national and cultural tradition risk is the sign of meaningless and hopeless recklessness, and at the same time, the sign of unbridled energy and power. To feel risk means to outwardly carelessly anticipate imminent danger and to ultimately concentrate the efforts of will related to overcoming the sweeping disaster.

Postmodernist Code in A. Block’s Play «Balaganchik» («The Puppet Show»)

The article shows that the literary methods in A. Block’s play «Balaganchik» ( «The Puppet Show») forestall the postmodernist concepts (decentralization of the subject, discoursing consciousness). The analysis of the play «Balaganchik» ( «The Puppet Show») from the chosen point of view allows to get a deeper insight into the sources of the Russian postmodernism and the artistic functions of a poetic word in the literature of the Silver age.

The article deals with the specific character of the genre of the English writer's autobiography of the turn of the 20th-21st century. by the example of Julian Barnes's autobiography "Nothing to be Afraid".

 

Body parts: Mechanisms and monsters in the late Romanian romance

The article examines the dominant concepts of the body in German Romanticism: the body-microcosm, the body-machine and the body-sign. On the material of the works of LA. von Arnim and ETA Hoffman analyzes the tendency towards the growth of mechanistic character in late romanticism, which leads to the disintegration of the body image into separate "parts", and the influence of physiognomy, which is intended to compensate for the lost harmony of the soul and body and to determine the correspondence between the inner and the outer.

THE WORLD OF THE POEM OF E. SPENSER "THE QUEEN OF THE FEY"

The article is devoted to the study of E. Spencer's poem "The Queen of the Fae", a heroic chivalric poem of the English Revival epoch of the 16th century. The poem "The Queen of the Fairies" combines various elements, the most important of which are the poetic fantasy and imagination of the author. The world of Queen Fairies is fantastic. This is the world of knights of beautiful ladies, fantastic creatures, folkloric characters, monsters, etc. In Spencer's poem, the leading place belongs to love, fantasy and Nature.

Lu Xun in Russia

The article examines historically determined approaches to the study of the oeuvre of the Chinese writer Lu Xun in the Soviet literary criticism in the 20–70s of the ХХth century, identifies the causes of interest in his heritage, analyzes the main achievements of the Russian Lu Xun studies, and provides a comparison with similar works by Chinese scientists.
