Special Features of the Portrait Genre in the Russian Literature of the 20th Century: V. P. Nekrasov’s Little Portraits

The article studies special features of the portrait genre in the Russian literature of the 20th century. Alongside traditional genre techniques in his cycle Little Portraits, V. P. Nekrasov uses his signature ones designed to reveal the individuality of the character, which allows us to talk about the genre evolution.

Parable Elements in the Novel by L. Ulitskaya Jacob’s Ladder

The article identifies and analyzes the elements of the parable inherent in L. E. Ulitskaya’s novel Jacob’s Ladder. It is noted that the parable spirit permeates both individual fragments of the text and the entire novel. The parable is manifested on the levels of content, range of philosophical issues and the style of the text: the language of the work is notable for the simplicity of expressive means.

The Concept Misery in the Eponymous Novel by Stephen King and Thriller Genre Conventions

The article considers the existing approaches in linguistics to the study of the concept verbalization in a literary text; a comprehensive approach is applied to the study of the concept ‘misery’ in the eponymous novel by Stephen King, which allows us to determine the contribution of linguaculture, genre and ideostyle of the author to this process. The hypothesis is put forward about the meaningfulness of Christian connotations of the concept ‘misery’ in King’s text.

Speech culture in professional communication

Two textbooks on speech culture for the law students are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on the speech culture aspects of professional communication. The structure of the textbooks is analyzed, as well as the system of tasks and the reference material.

A Household Sketch and the Process of Internal Complexification of Small Genres at the Turn of the XIX– XXth Centuries (On the Material of the Publications in «Znanie» collections (1903–1910))

The article deals with the analysis of the transformation of a household sketch in small prose at the turn of the centuries, with the growing complexity of «a life piece» from being social and typical towards involving psychology, philosophy and the depth of a fulfilled life.

On the problem of cyclization of “Little Tragedies” by A. S. Pushkin

The article proposes a new version of the cycle-forming organization of “Little Tragedies” by A. S. Pushkin, after a brief excursion through the already existing cycle-forming concepts of a group of scenes and plays united in Russian culture under the non-author’s general name “Little Tragedies”. The intra-textual situation of unexpected, spontaneous inspiration of the central characters of the plays included in the cycle is put forward as a binding compositional element.

“We are an association, we are a community, but we are not a school” – to the 100th anniversary of the “Serapion brothers” association

This article reviews the materials of a multi-author monograph dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the literary association “Serapion brothers”. This project has united researchers from Saratov, Moscow, St Petersburg, considered to be renowned experts in the history of Russian literature of the 1920–1930s. The research is based on the unique documents from the Serapion brothers’ legacy being introduced into the scientifi c circulation (K. Fedin, Vs. Ivanov, N. Tikhonov, V. Kaverin, I. Gruzdev).
