Gender influence on structural discourse markers in the English popular-science discourse (based on TED talks)

The article focuses on the influence of gender on structural discourse markers in the English popular-science genre of TED talks. The research is based on 20 English lectures (10 male and 10 female ones). All the lectures highlight the problems of education and online learning. The overall study materials comprise about 50,000 words. The structural discourse markers include global and local ones. Local structural discourse markers are used to connect statements, express the relations of cause, effect, time, condition, exclusion, inclusion.

Влияние гендера на использование дискурсивов-организаторов в устном англоязычном научно-популярном дискурсе (на материале TED Talks)

Данная статья посвящена исследованию влияния гендера на использование спикерами дискурсивов-организаторов в рамках англоязычных научно-популярных лекций TED talks, посвященных современным проблемам образования. Материалом исследования послужили 20 англоязычных лекций (10 мужских и 10 женских) общим объемом около 50 000 словоупотреблений. Дискурсивы-организаторы подразделяются на глобальные и локальные.

The Effect of the Scientific and Popular Science Discourse on the Basic Cognitive Level

The article focuses on lexical units with the meaning of physical perception that presumably are able to produce a certain effect on the recipient of the information, and on their special feature of functioning in the scientific and popular science discourse. The most numerous units belong to the group of visual perception; the units unconnected with a specific channel of perception are also popular.

How Gender Affects the Use of Organizational Discourse Markers in Popular-Science Discourse (Based on TED talks)

The article deals with the use of English organizational discourse markers which provide compositional and logical cohesion and integrity of the narration in spoken popular-science genre of TED talks. It is proved that on the level of speech organization male and female speakers using discourse markers demonstrate more similarities than differences.
