Changes in the UK leading media's portrayal of China during the Covid-19 pandemic and the special military operation

The aim of the present study is to trace changes in the construction of the image of China in the British media during two crisis periods: the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian military operation. Each period encompasses a panic (escalation) phase and a recovery (stagnation) phase. Using data from the Factiva database, 70,356 articles published in four British media outlets were analyzed: the Times, the Sun, the Guardian and the Daily Mirror. The methodological basis of the study constitute the dependency theory and the agenda setting theory.

The Image of Woman in Politics as Reflected in Internet Mass Media of the Republic of Tatarstan

In the article the analysis of the image of women-politicians of Tatarstan is suggested, based on the publications in Internet media. On the basis of qualitative content analysis of texts published in the Internet media the classification of image types is given, each of them is characterized. The images of five women-politicians are analyzed in terms of personal and social character traits.

The Image of an Enemy in Humorous Rhymes Dedicated to WWII (Based on Tver Region Archives)

In the article the image of an enemy in humorous rhymes dedicated to WWII is analyzed. The central theme is the image of Adolf Hitler. In the conclusions the enemy image is shown as an archaic one. The sphere of humorous rhymes existence is shown. The article is based on the archive materials from the expeditions to Tver region.

Blacksmith Vakula from N. V. Gogol’s Story Christmas Eve as an Image of a «Liminal Being»

In the article Gogol’s image of the blacksmith Vakula is studied as one of the so-called «liminal beings», typical for the writer’s works. In the nature of such creatures there is a transition from the supernatural world into the real one, which allows them to act as mediators.

The article discusses the issues related to the problems of communicative-discoursive variation of symbols of culture in the fictional text. The material of the research is the novel «The Joy Luck Club» by the modern American writer of the Chinese origin Amy Tan.

To the Poetics of the Images of A. V. Sukhovo-Kobylin. Varravin and Raspluev

The article deals with the images of General Varravin and Rasplyuev and examines their relationships. The researcher shows how the state, represented by Varravin, creates a monster, which at some point becomes a danger not only for the city inhabitants, but also for its own creators.

The article considers texts accompanying the comedy «The Inspector General». The researcher traces the changes of the author’s assessment of his own texts, the author’s doubts and self-reflection.

Perceptive and Semantic Keynotes in the Formation of Artistic Style

The article considers the influence of the forms of the psychological phenomenon of perception on writers’ aesthetic systems. Visual and audio types of perception are reflected in fiction in the most consistent and systemic manner. Different authors exhibit variations in their correlation: either the visual or the acoustic type prevails.

Glumov’s Double in the Comedy by A. N. Ostrovsky Enough Stupidity in Every Wise Man

The article considers the image of Mashenka Turusina from the play by A. N. Ostrovsky Enough Stupidity in Every Wise Man. Analyzing textual behavior of the character, the author proves that the young foster daughter is not only ‘a home martyr’ but also a skillful manipulator who adjusts the environment to her own liking. This game makes her similar to the main character of the comedy – Glumov: he tries to make his way up by flattery and deception.

The article researches how Khlestakov’s image that has become a household name has impacted the oeuvre of the later play writers. The images of the so-called Khlestakov-like characters are considered in the works of Gogol himself, of Sukhovo-Kobylin, Saltykov-Shchedrin, Ostrovsky.
