A North-American small town as a topos of Robertson Davis’s and Stephen King’s novels (Fifth Business and Revival)

Stephen King’s novel Revival (2014) takes after Robertson Davies’s novel Fifth Business (1975), the first book of the Deptford trilogy, although the name of the Canadian writer is significantly missing from the list of King’s acknowledgements. The paper is focused on the comparative analysis of the two novels, the starting point being the category of “fi fth business” borrowed by S. King from R. Davis.

Роман американского писателя Стивена Кинга «Возрождение» (Revival, 2014) несомненно генетически связан с первым романом «Дептфордской трилогии» канадского писателя Робертсона Дэвиса «Пятый персонаж» (Fifth Business, 1975), хотя Кинг и не указывает имя Р. Дээвиса в ряду прецедентных текстов в многоименном посвящении к роману. Основой для сближения данных текстов может служить не только категория «пятого персонажа», очевидно позаимствованная Кингом у Дэвиса (что показано в данной статье), но и особенности романного хронотопа.

The Motive of Extemporaneous Rumor in the Chronotope of the Cycle by N. V. Gogol «Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka»

The article considers the motive of rumor in its spatial and time expression based on the cycle of «Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka» by N. V. Gogol. The stylistic functions of the rumor motive in the novels’ plots and the internal link with the folk tradition are researched.

novels by N. V. Gogol and their link to the chronotopos of the
Russian capital are studied. Analogies are drawn with the texts of the

The article shows the peculiarity of chronotopos in the novels by G. Yakhina Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes and by A. Ganieva Bride and Groom. The author studies the historic realia being represented and the modern ones being fixed in their unique ethnic context, national self-identification being transformed to personal, as well as the ways of expressing author’s national identity.

The Specifics of Chronotope of the Novel by S. Lukyanenko Rough Draft

The article considers the chronotope of the novel Rough Draft by S. Lukyanenko, its special features being due to the combination of two genres – urban fantasy and conspiracy novel. Even though both genres contain some common motives and figures, in the work by Lukyanenko urban fantasy genre prevails, because the main character himself mainly forms the chronotope: slows down the time, creates new locations by the power of his mind (rooms, buildings etc.).

Theatricality in the Story by A. P. Chekhov Ionych

The article discusses the features of how the artistic space of Chekhov’s story is organized. Two key chronotopes are identified: Home and Garden. The structural features of the chronotope of the House are analyzed. It is shown how the chronotope of the House exercises the determining influence on the characters, for whom theatricality as an imitation of life becomes their main feature.
