A System of Chronotopes in Mikhail Shishkin’s Novel Pismovnik (Letter Book): on the Issue of Artistic Unity

The article researches the interaction of different space and time layers in Mikhail Shishkin’s novel Pismovnik (Letter Book) (2010). This interaction is characteristic for the writer’s prose. The author of the article distinguishes key chronotopes and chronotopical principles providing the unity of the artistic world of the novel.

On the Poetic Transcendence of N. Gumilyov

The article considers the techniques of formal organization of the transcendent lyric poetry and the peculiarity of its spatial structure. Different types of poetic transcendence are analyzed on the example of N. Gumilyov’s poems, their characteristic features are singled out.

The article analyzes the forms of divine intercession as well as the means of their integration in the text of the military novels; the functions of divine intervention are indicated, both within and without the plot.

The Motive of a Person’s Self-Destruction in V. Rasputin’s Stories of the 1990–2000s

The motive of a person’s self-destruction is analyzed in the article on the material of V. Rasputin’s late short stories. These works show the signs of the anthropological crisis which is perceived by the writer not just as a threat of a distant future but as a danger hanging over humankind in the here and now.

Biographical t ext in Literature and Cinema: ‘A Room and a h alf’ of J. Brodsky and A. Khrzhanovsky

The article considers the techniques of translating a biographical text into the language of the cinema which have been used by the director A. Khrzhanovsky in the film A Room and a Half. Visual and textual quotes from the poet’s essays, interviews and poems have been analyzed, as well as the contemporaries’ reminiscences.


The article uses the material of the autograph "Ode to Beethoven" to study the peculiarities of Mandelstam's work on the text of this poem. The motive composition of the final version and the cultural contexts that participate in the formation of the semantics of the poem are also taken into account.

The Problem of Cyclization in Love Lyrics of Mandelstam (In the Poems Dedicated to Olga Vaksel)

The article gives an overview of the uncollected love cycles of O. Mandelstam. The emphasis is placed on such problems of studying them as determining the addressee and the composition, analyzing their artistic integrity. A more detailed analysis of the semantic structure of the cycle dedicated to Olga Vaksel is given.

The Home and Hearth of the Russian Intellectuals and the Revolution in the Novels by M. Aldanov and B. Pasternak

The article shows the social and cultural content of the concept of the hearth on the eve of the Russian Revolution of the 1917. In the novels Suicide by M. Aldanov, Doctor Zhivago by B. Pasternak the hearth entails a complex of motives related to the premonition of the loss of the family well-being.

The image of Lermontov in the Soviet poetry and Meeting by Bulat Okudzhava

The article examines the literary context of one of the most important poems of Bulat Okudzhava. Special emphasis is placed on the pattern of making a classic poet a myth in the belles-lettres of the Soviet era. The connections of the poem Meeting with Lermontov’s poetry are noted, the functions of reminiscences are examined. The place of Lermontov’s image in the ‘poetic mythology’ of Okudzhava’s poetry is defined.
