A linguo-cognitive analysis of the English-language transport discourse within the framework of the Transport Cognitive-Cultural Cluster

Abstract: 

The article deals with a linguo-cognitive analysis of the English-language professional transport discourse, based on a corpus of texts from specialised industry publications of the United States and the United Kingdom in the period of 2020–2021. The methodological basis of the study is the Transport Cognitive-Cultural Cluster model developed by the author, which enables a systemic description of the conceptual, axiological, and cognitive structure of professional transport communication. Within this model, four levels of analysis are identified: key concepts, metaphorical models, value orientations, and cognitive scenarios, all interrelated within the discourse. The conceptual layer is structured into a three-tier hierarchy: core, semi-core, and periphery, reflecting different degrees of normative consolidation, frequency, and institutional relevance. The analysis reveals that English-language transport discourse is shaped by stable cognitive patterns and lexico-semantic dominants related to sustainability, digitalisation, safety, mobility, social justice, and national leadership. These elements represent institutional priorities, ideological frameworks, and strategic objectives of transport policy in the USA and UK. Furthermore, a strong correlation is observed between value-based components and the metaphorical structure of discourse, which facilitates the transmission of regulatory frameworks through stable linguistic formulas. The research results may be applicable in the fields of applied linguistics, cognitive terminology, and cross-cultural communication, as well as in the development and optimisation of professional communication models within the transport sector.
