Functions of phraseological units in German-language rap texts
This study presents a comprehensive linguistic analysis of the functioning of phraseological units in German-language rap discourse, which is examined as a specific object of linguistic inquiry and as a genre representing unique and underexplored linguistic material. Special attention is given to the pragmatic and situational conditioning of phraseological units usage, which necessitates the application of the functional approach to their analysis. From this perspective, PUs are interpreted not merely as lexical items but as dynamic communicative tools that contribute to stylistic expressiveness and the realization of communicative goals within the literary text. The theoretical section of the article reviews various scholarly opinions that conceptualize German-language rap as a complex semiotic formation, as well as a literary and poetic text characterized by a high degree of linguistic mastery and cultural reference. The empirical corpus of the study consists of lyrics by contemporary German-speaking rap artists and music groups, such as Kollegah, Bushido, Shindy, K.I.Z., Farid Bang, among others, selected from the Genius.com platform. The article discusses the dual nature of PUs in this discourse – encompassing both constant functions, inherent across all contexts, and variable functions that emerge depending on the specific discursive situation. The findings indicate that phraseological units in German-language rap are used purposefully and in a motivated manner, performing both constant and variable functions, which ensures their high communicative and expressive-stylistic effectiveness, enhances the perlocutionary effect of utterances, and contributes to the formation of an individual author's style. The results of the study facilitate a deeper understanding of the linguistic and cultural features of German-language rap discourse, refine the linguistic typology of phraseological units within this genre, reveal their role as mechanisms of linguistic continuity and cultural intertextuality, and broaden insights into the specific nature of phraseological units functioning in the genre system of contemporary German-language rap.
