Linguocultural Concept ‘Doctor’ in the Russian Artistic Medical Discourse (Based on the Novel The City Surgeon’s Notes by Dmitry Pravdin)

The article focuses on the specific features of verbalization of the linguo-cultural concept ‘doctor’ in the Russian artistic medical discourse. The article aims to define the linguo-cultural concept of the artistic medical discourse, to explain the specific nature of linguistic means which objectify it in the Russian linguo-culture, to find out nuclear, near-nuclear and peripheral components of this concept, to define forms of its linguistic actualization.

Contemporary Medical and Pedagogical Discourse

The article aims to consider medical and pedagogical discourse as a special type of institutional discourse realized at higher medical educational establishments. The basic characteristics of medical and pedagogical discourse and the forms of its participants’ interactions are analyzed.

Peculiarities of Medical Discourse in Professional and Non-Professional Settings

The article discusses structural and functional differences between the medical discourses that are used in professional and non-professional settings. Having analyzed over 51,000 word usages, the authors conclude that the most significant differences are: the organization of the synonymous sets of the hyperonym ‘Disease’, the design of paradigmatic and syntagmatic connections, and the application of slang words and expressions.

Medical discourse and / or morbual code: Problems of terminology of modern literary criticism

The article deals with the problem of differentiating the spheres of use of the terms ‘medical discourse’ and ‘morbual code’ while analyzing a literary text. The theoretical definition of the morbual code of literature has been clarified and its varieties and main representatives have been described on the basis of semiotic, linguistic and cultural approaches.

The means of expressing the category of politeness in medical discourse (On the material of the doctor and patient speech communication)

The article considers the communicative category of politeness and defi nes the role of this category in the process of professional doctor-patient communication. The category of politeness functions in the form of speech etiquette and is obligatory in doctor-patient conversations. The authors have analyzed the means of realization of speech etiquette and politeness in situations of professional medical communication, and determined those which are most frequently used in strategies of medical discourse.
