Analysis of Andrey Platonov’s works from the point of view of Taoism

Abstract: 

This study aims to identify and analyze points of convergence between the philosophical content in the works of the Soviet writer Andrei Platonov (1899–1951) and the core concepts of Chinese Taoism. Despite the relatively late start in translating and studying Andrei Platonov's oeuvre in China, resulting from both historical-political factors and the uniquely complex linguistic style of his literary creations, contemporary literary studies acknowledge certain parallels between Platonov's worldview and the traditional Chinese philosophy of Taoism. Employing the comparative analysis of Platonov's texts (novels Chevengur, Happy Moscow; novellas "The Foundation Pit"; fairy tales "The Unknown Flower", "Ivan the Talentless and Elena the Wise" among others) and the research of scholars (K. A. Barsht, Dan Xiuan), this article demonstrates how Platonov's contemplation of existence, death ("substance of existence"), and the attitude of man towards nature and society resonates with Taoist principles: the unity of man and nature (天人合一), the transformation of "qi" (化气), "the highest virtue is like water" (上善若水), "great wisdom seems like foolishness" (大智若愚), "return to simplicity" (返璞归真), "governance through inaction" (无为而治), and the acceptance of life's adversities. The research confirms the existence of significant correlations, indicating both the universality of the existential questions and philosophical problems raised by Andrei Platonov and the presence of cultural-philosophical parallels between Russian and Chinese cultural traditions that fully warrant further investigation
