Auxiliary Communicative Units in Russian and the US Presidential Addresses

On the materials of the genre of Presidential Address to Federal Congress the article offers a comparison in functioning of auxiliary communicative units in Russian and American political discourse, and reveals the universal and specific characteristics of their usage in political leaders’ speech

Social Media as a Tool of Modern Politics (The Case of D. Trump’s Twitter)

The article deals with the analysis of communication of a politician in the social network Twitter. The research is based on D. Trump’s microblog. The focus is on the means of interaction between the politician and the recipient, his self-presentation, and ways of shaping public opinion and reality.

Manipulation in the American Political Discourse: The Linguo-Pragmatic Aspect

The article provides an analysis of manipulation in the American political discourse of 2015–2016. It is postulated that manipulation inherently belongs to the people’s speech and in particular to the speech of the politicians. In this respect, it is deemed to be wrong to study manipulation in an exclusively negative light. The focus of the research is the effect of the manipulatory impact and this interest is predetermined by the emphasis on the linguo-pragmatic aspects of communication.

The Taxonomy of Political Discourse in Contemporary World in the Context of the Anthropocentric Paradigm

The article discusses political discourse as a communicative space of modern politics in the context of the anthropocentric paradigm. The following components of the political discourse have been outlined: the character of the subject and that of the addressee, genres of oral and written speech, the opposition of monologue and dialogue, the functions, the amount of information among the genres, the aim of speech.

Сognitive Space of the Metaphorical Models of ‘Antagonism’ in the Political Discourse of the Spanish Party Podemos

Using the tools of discourse analysis, the study reveals basic antagonisms that constitute the cognitive space of the discourse of the Spanish party Podemos. The confrontation of the people and politicians led to the creation of a holistic metaphorical model ‘POLITICS is ANTAGONISM’, which was subsequently transformed into several types of discursive oppositions analyzed in this work.

‘Chinese Casket’: A New Manipulation Instrument in Spanish Political Discourse in the Age of Cyberdemocracy

The article is a case-study of a ‘Chinese casket’, a new manipulative technique used in Spanish Internet resources in the era of cyberdemocracy. The author provides a classification of the ‘Chinese casket’ types. The article analyses manipulative potential of the technique both in political and newspaper discourses, illustrating the point with the use of conspicuous examples found in various Spanish resources.

Spain’s Image Representation in the Spanish King’s Christmas Messages

The Spanish King’s Christmas message is a traditional event of the social and political life in Spain, and it is one of the few occasions when the head of state directly addresses the nation. This annual address is structured according to strict traditions of classical rhetoric, it has its own language and composition features and has a symbolic and ritual nature. This article analyzes Felipe VI’s Christmas messages (from 2014 to 2018) and focuses on the constructed images of the Spanish monarch (addresser), the Spanish nation (addressee) and the country.

Discourse on immigration in the USA: A comparative analysis of president’ Donald Trump’s speeches and articles in two american newspapers

The article is dedicated to the discourse analysis of the themes raised in the American media when reporting on immigrants. The study attempts to gain an understanding of the existing public attitudes towards refugees and the problem of immigration. We used a mixed research approach combining discourse analysis, framing analysis and corpus linguistics to examine 151 articles over the 12-month period of 2018.

The peculiarities of the oppositional political discourse of Ugandan politician Bobi Wine

The article analyzes the political discourse of one of the most infl uential Ugandan opposition politicians, Bobi Wine, who is famous for his scathing criticism of Ioweri Museveni’s regime, existing since 1986. Bobi Wine, who offi cially started his political career in 2017, the year when he was elected in the Ugandan parliament, actually does not recognize the legitimacy of the rule of his ideological enemy. In the country the political myth is created according to which the opposition, and not Yoweri Musevini, won the presidential elections of 2021.

On the self-presentation in the sport discourse (On the example of mixed martial arts fighters’ discourse)

The article considers specific features of MMA fighters’ self-presentation. The strategy of self-presentation was studied predominantly on the basis of the political discourse, but it is used in the sport discourse as well. It has been found out that for self-presentation sportsmen actively use metaphors, epithets, similes, allegories, cliches, actualize such modality and formulas as ‘I am an underdog’, ‘I am the best’, ‘I am like you’.
