The review is dedicated to the book by V. S. Krivonos, a well-known literary scholar, researcher of N. V. Gogol’s work and the Russian literature of the 19th-21st centuries, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor of Samara State Social and Pedagogical University.

The paper focuses on spatial construction in Jean Rhys’s «Wide Sargasso Sea», namely, on the opposition of the tropical Caribbean islands and England as two island spaces contributing to the development of the central psychological conflict of the novel, to heroes’ characterization.
The article focuses on the garden as a literary image based on the archetype and some mythological allusions. The structure of the garden is analyzed in detail as the novel space at variance and in connection with the naturalistic aesthetic approach.
