The article reveals the category of time from the perspective of functional grammar, illustrated by the comparison of structural fields in the source and target texts of Oscar Wilde’s “Model Millionaire”. 

The task of the paper is to study theoretical aspects of the pragmatic use of phatic tokens. To achieve this aim, the authors review and specify the concept of phatic communication; describe the system of phatic tokens and provide a new approach to their structural organization; besides, they consider the usage of phatic tokens in different registers.

Written on the material of Russian dialect and colloquial speech the article describes purely grammatical means of expressing the idea “aim”, such as introduced by the formal marker «–бы» subordinate clauses, the prepositional case and case forms. It shows common traits in the ways of rendering the same shades of the meaning «aim» expressed by different linguistic means.
