Word-Concept ‘Case’ in the Russian Interdiscourse

The article offers the analysis of the word ‘case’ denoting one of the key concepts of the legal speech. Its being used in different types of discourses allows to reveal the action of the integrative processes in the concept sphere of culture. The concept undergoes the transformation of meaning, the consistency of which can be represented in terms of substantiation and studying the notions of ‘professional discourse’ and ‘interdiscourse’.

The Place of Metaphor in the Representation of Concepts (Based on the Concept of ‘Neighbor’)

The article identifies the main characteristics of the concept ‘neighbor’ as a part of the opposition ‘own’ – ‘alien’ and the extent of their reflection in the basic metaphorical models of the lexeme ‘neighbor’ and its word-formation derivatives.

Communicative and Discursive Characteristics of Analytical Blogs Dedicated to Scottish Independence

The article reviews the main communicative and discursive characteristics of the texts published in political blogs by the supporters of Scottish independence; the author reveals the degree of how these characteristics impact the lexical and semantic features of the texts under analysis.

Revealing the Content of English Family Names in a Linguocultural Dictionary

The present article reports on the lexicographical description of culturally significant English family names being a part of English speakers’ background knowledge. The given structuring of a dictionary entry allows to reveal the content of such names including, in the broad sense, a set of cultural, historical, social, ethnic and other connotations.

Functioning of Arabisms in the Russian Speech (based on the Russian National Corpus texts)

The article focuses on the lexical units borrowed from the Arabian language. The Arabisms of the theme group of ‘Buildings, structures, construction materials’ are analyzed. The dictionary definitions of these words from the Arabian dictionary Al Muajam Al Waseet (2004) are compared to the definitions represented in the Arabian-Russian and Russian-Arabian dictionaries, in the dictionaries of foreign words of different authors.

The French Language in the Environment of the English Language Expansion

At the end of XX century, globalization processes have brought the English language to the leading position. It prevails over other languages in many spheres: in economics, trade, engineering, science, computer science, etc. Due to this factor some of the languages have already disappeared, others are disappearing, yet others, and French among them, withstand and continue to retain their rightful place in international communication.

The Dependence of the Adverbial Complicators Functions on the Meaning of the Base Proposition Predicate

The article is dedicated to adverbialisation – one of the processes of a simple sentence semantic complication. The author considers distinctive correlation of the meanings of the base and side propositions in sentences with adverbial complicators. The paper reveals some typical models of such correlation in the texts in five spheres of communication. The author concludes that the functioning of adverbial complicators has both typical and specific features in different communication areas.

The Dynamics of the Semantic and Word-formation Subsystems: the Word-family with the Stem -ид- (go) in the XI–XVIIth Centuries

The article traces the dynamics of how the word-formation family of words of the movement verb go was formed during seven centuries; characteristic features of its evolution are identified. The most typical word-formation models for the verb word-family are singled out, as well as exceptional word-formation models; the author researches the morphological content of the word-family, semantics of the derivatives and their genre and stylistic peculiarities.

To the Question of the Ludic Function of the Precedent Phenomena in a Literary Discourse

The article touches upon several aspects of precedent phenomena functioning in the literary discourse. The peculiarities of using precedent phenomena in the ludic function are explained not only in terms of mundane communication which is reflected in the literary discourse but also with regard to the inner mechanisms of a literary work. The article discusses several specificities of how precedent phenomena are used in order to create a word play. The author also puts forward a suggestion that the ludic function of a precedent phenomenon may determine its form.

Verbal and Non-verbal Techniques of Creating the Comic in Creolized Texts of Social Advertisement

The article shows how the speaker of an advertising message widely uses the comic and the humorous in the discourse in order to optimize the process of perception.
